Yoshi Saburo Kuno was a professor of Japanese in the Department of Oriental Languages at the University of California, Berkeley. Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1865, Kuno studied civil engineering, astronomy and mathematics at U.C. Berkeley, obtaining degrees in 1897 and 1900. After serving the university in various capacities, he became an instructor of Japanese in 1911, an assistant professor in 1920 and briefly served as Oriental Languages chairman from 1924 to 1925. Kuno retired in 1935. He is best known for his unfinished multi-volume work Japanese expansion on the Asiatic continent, the first two volumes published in 1937 and 1940. Kuno married Emma Ellen Fong, the widow of Kuno's colleague Reverend Walter N. Fong, in 1907. Yoshi Kuno died in 1941.
